O jogo possui regras a serem seguidas, pode não possuir um objetivo visível, mas o próprio jogador estabelece esse objetivo. Além de você também participar de uma história interativa, representado por um avatar. Outro diferencial do The Sims para os outros jogos com enredo já pré-definido, é que The Sims não tem fim. É uma história interativa de uma vida normal, sem monstros para caçar, ou itens para conseguir. E é exatamente nisso que está a diversão desse jogo. Você assume a vida de outra pessoa, tomando decisões por ela, escolhendo com quem se relacionar, onde trabalhar. Muito fácil de ser jogado, seja no controle do Super Nes, seja no teclado em algum emulador. Interagindo com o ambiente e outros personagens, você vai desenvolvendo a história a partir do desenrolar da trama.
